Asha-Jyothi has been organizing the 5K run/walk across ever growing list of cities in USA as the signature annual event for fundraising. Now, Asha-Jyothi has debuted in a different role, by being a sponsor of a run event conducted in northern India, coinciding with Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti celebrations. The event has been organized by Department of Health, government of UP, and managed District and State Leprosy officers and their staff.

Gandhi Jayanthi Day (10/2/19) Mini Marathon in Lucknow, UP

The purpose of the event is to increase awareness of Leprosy, and the efforts to eradicate it through MDT (Multiple Drug Treatment) by making the healthcare generally accessible. The event saw participation of 150 students who ran the 1.5 K distance from start/finish line at Ram Manohar Lohia park, Gomti Nagar, situated on the banks of river Gomti, in Lucknow, UP.

The volunteer team from Asha-Jyothi lead by lead volunteer, Anurag Singh, braved the rain, helping with event setup and played a major role in smooth execution by managing the supplies of water, fruits, and snack to runners and other participants. This drew appreciation from department staff and officers, including other dignitaries.

By becoming a partner with Leprosy department of state of Uttar Pradesh, Asha-Jyothi, created awareness of the organization, and thus paving way for handling charity programs in other parts of state. The campaign, “Manishka’s walk for water”, is aiming to install bore wells for remote villages in UP, that don’t have access to clean drinking water. It is one of few such campaigns, being planned in the state.
